Chapter Eleven

Jabari

Danger.

The scent was unmistakable.

I jerked up from a near slumber, taking a deep whiff. We’d fallen asleep and as I peered out from the cave, I could tell daybreak was within minutes, the warm orange glow on the horizon more menacing than anything else.

I sensed that we’d been compromised. Whoever had sent her here likely had a sinister reason.

Capturing us together.

While there was no way of knowing if I was correct, I needed to get her to safety. The sense of utter euphoria I’d experienced from the serum had worn off, leading me to believe something continued to be wrong. Shifting, I eased away from her, struggling almost immediately as I walked toward the entrance to the cave. Shit. The strength I’d felt only hours before had waned, the weakness sliding into every organ and muscle debilitating.

I’d read her mind, deep concerns that whatever serum she’d developed had short-lived effects. As I lifted my arm, the tremor in my fingers was just the beginning, the powerful drug administered before she’d arrived counteracting the earlier effects.

I could feel my beast prepared to return. Damn it. I walked a few yards further, struggling to take deep breaths. There was nothing my anger could do to cease what was happening.

Sensing her presence only a few feet away, I tipped my head. “We need to leave.” The words were husky, little more than guttural sounds.

“It’s happening. Isn’t it?” Raven asked, her tone grave. “You’re shifting again.”

“Yes. We need to leave.” I turned to face her, a growl erupting from the bowels of my being. “And you are coming with me to my village.”

“I can’t do that. I was given a gift by the person who sent me here, a possibility of adding the last compound to the serum. I’m a scientist. I need to finish my work.”

“There is... no chance in hell that... you are going back to the facility. As soon as you are identified as my mate, they will come hunting for you.” I shook my head, trying to rid the cobwebs. I had no control over the shift. None.

She shook her head as she walked closer. “Who are they? How would they know?”

“Trust me. The assholes responsible will know. I refuse to take that chance.” A nagging remained in the back of my mind. Would anyone within the Claw betray me?

“Then how am I supposed to help you, or any of the other Breeds? Do you have a scientific lab where you live? Do you have the correct equipment so I can continue my work?”

Snarling, I took another whiff, a jab of pain slicing into my gut. “The humans are getting closer.”

“It’s far too early.” She craned her neck, her eyes opening wide. “They can’t be here.”

“But they are. Which means the... person who sent you lied.” Tipping my head back, even my eyesight had been altered. What. The. Fuck?

“Why? Why would he do that? He acted as if he wanted to save you, all of you. Hell, all the Breeds,” she insisted.
